Tin Shui Wai

2008-2013

Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong

Tin Shui Wai – This area of Hong Kong has been dubbed the “city of sadness” for its high rate of unemployment, suicides, and spousal and child abuse. Tin Shui Wai is the victim of hasty town planning, insufficient infrastructure and poor governance. While the housing projects themselves are orderly and clean, the lack of employment, meaningful social interaction with other towns has led to the isolation of this district from Hong Kong’s other suburbs. More job opportunities, transportation subsidies and social programs and workers are urgently needed to change the dire situation. Since support from the local government requires lengthy procedures and is limited, the hope of the refugees in Tin Shui Wai rely on sympathetic people who have noticed their plight and are willing to lend a helping hand.

July 2013

Sponsored summer programs for grades 2 through 6 for children from Tin Shui Wai, an area consisting of government housing for low income families. The programs were run by St. James Settlement, a nonprofit organization in Hong Kong, and were designed to improve mental focus and physical well-being for underprivileged children. Special thanks to students in Stony Brook’s Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA). Their fundraising efforts played a significant role in supporting these programs.

Giving Circle Fund has made a donation of $23,300 HKD (or $3000 USD) to fund two special programs to enhance the experiences of children in Tin Shui Wai, during their summer vacation. The first program is “Little Magicians” – to enhance self-confidence and self-esteem of the deprived children through learning and performing magic. The children can contribute to the society by delivering voluntary service of playing and performing magic to elder people or the needy. The second program is “Band training” – to enhance their interpersonal skills through learning teamwork and cooperation.

2009-Chinese New Year

Giving Circle Fund donated 420 packages of traditional Chinese dry goods for the Chinese New Year’s dinner. The Board members assembled the food packages consisting of a variety of traditional Chinese foods and distributed the packages to the 420 students in grades 3 – 6 at Faith Lutheran School in Kowloon. The students were so excited to bring the food packages home to their parents to help prepare the Chinese New Year’s dinner. The Board members wished each and every one of the students a “Gung Hey Fat Choy”! The smiles on the faces of the children were priceless!

July 2009 – Tin Shui Wai Summer Program

In July of 2008, Giving Circle Fund made a donation to fund 4 different summer programs that benefited 110 children in Tin Shui Wai. This program allowed unsupervised children to have a fun and enriching experience during the summer by offering training for the children in Tin Shui Wai to explore their potential and build their leadership for the future.
